چکیده

background and objectives : the incidence of fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, especially by candida species, has increased in recent years. this study was designed to identify candida species and determine antifungal susceptibility patterns of 595 yeast strains isolated from various clinical specimens. material and methods : identification of the isolates were determined by the api 20 c aux kit and antifungal susceptibilities of the species to fluconazole, amphotericin b, ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, and caspofungin were determined by the agar-based e-test method. results : candida albicans (48%) was the most frequently isolated species, followed by candida kruzei (16.1%), candida glabrata (13.5%), candida kefyr (7.4%), candida parapsilosis (4.8%), candida tropicalis (1.7%) and other species (8.5%). resistance varies depending on the species and the respective antifungal agents. comparing the mic90 for all the strains, the lower mic90 was observed for caspofungin (0.5 μg/ml). the mic90 for all candida species were 64 μg/ml for fluconazole, 0.75 μg/ml for amphotericin b, 4 μg/ml for ketoconazole, 4 μg/ml for itraconazole, and 2 μg/ml for voriconazole. conclusions : species definition and determination of antifungal susceptibility patterns are advised for the proper management and treatment of patients at risk for systemic candidiasis. resistance to antifungal agents is an alarming sign for the emerging common nosocomial fungal infections.

In vitro activity of five antifungal agents against Candida albicans isolates, Sari, Iran

Background and Purpose: Candida albicans is the most common causative agent of candidiasis. Candidiasis management is dependent on the immune status of the host, severity of disease, and the choice of antifungal drug. Antifungals, specifically triazoles, are widely administered for the treatment of invasive fungal infections. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of C. alb...

Genotyping of the MTL loci and susceptibility to two antifungal agents of Candida glabrata clinical isolates.

The opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida glabrata is the second most common isolate from bloodstream infections worldwide and is naturally less susceptible to the antifungal drug fluconazole than other Candida species. C. glabrata is a haploid yeast that contains three mating-type like loci (MTL), although no sexual cycle has been described. Strains containing both types of mating information ...

Antifungal susceptibility patterns of colonized Candida species isolates from immunocompromised pediatric patients in five university hospitals

Background and Objectives Colonization of Candida species is common in pediatric patients admitted to hematology-oncology wards. The aim of this study was to identify colonized Candida species and their susceptibility patterns in hematologic pediatric patients. Materials and Methods Samples were collected from mouth, nose, urine and stool of the patients admitted to five university hospitals ...

Antifungal Susceptibility Analysis of Clinical Isolates of Candida parapsilosis in Iran

BACKGROUND Candida parapsilosis is an emergent agent of invasive fungal infections. This yeast is one of the five most widespread yeasts concerned in invasive candidiasis. C. parapsilosis stands out as the second most common yeast species isolated from patients with bloodstream infections especially in neonates with catheter. Recently several reports suggested that its reduced susceptibility to...
